The meeting will be an opportunity to hear from the Conservancy board and staff about the goings on in Claremont Canyon and discuss fire safety issues. Berkeley’s Assistant Fire Chief Colin Arnold will share with us how to make our homes and neighborhoods more wildfire safe.

No longer based on theories, research has identified specific actions people and communities can take. “When you examine why some homes survive a wildfire, it may appear random but in most cases it’s not,” said Chief Arnold, who runs Berkeley’s wildland-urban interface division, during a 2024 webinar. “Homes that are hardened and have adequate separation from one another and have fire-resistive landscaping, especially in that first five feet around structures, are much more likely to survive.”

Since 2008 Chief Arnold has held the ranks of firefighter, paramedic, apparatus operator, and captain within Berkeley’s fire department and was appointed to assistant fire chief in 2024. Chief Arnold holds a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley and a masters in public administration from USC. He was two-time recipient of the Alameda County EMS Siren Award for Bravery, and Berkeley Fire firefighter of the year (2016).

Hope to see everyone on November 16.
